Fundamentals of Online Teaching

Online teaching is the new normal in education field. This industry has a very optimistic future. Virtual classes are one step ahead of traditional classrooms. However they are similar in some aspects like use of study materials, giving lectures etc. but it is the mode of conduct that makes a difference. There are some basic principles to conduct a successful online class.

These fundamentals of online teaching are enlisted below:

  • First and most relevant principle is you should always use simple graphics and language. Using a power point presentation to teach a concept to your learners is the most common way. But it can be problematic in some ways. Some of your learners might be facing network issue and will be difficult for them to understand every bit of your ppt. Therefore, indulge pie charts, graphs, simple images in your teaching material & keep the language easy to understand.
  • Try to make your classes short. Students can get bored in long lectures. Always keep your lessons short to keep your learners interested and engaged. You can also divide the assigned time of video. For instance, if you have a 60 minute lesson then you can divide it in 20 minutes for each 3 topics. Also add a quick quiz in between.
  • As an educator you must know your learners well. In a traditional classroom a teacher knows every student, similarly in a virtual class too you must understand your learners. You should be aware of their pace and capability of learning so that you can guide them accordingly. When your learners will feel supported by their educator then they will automatically work hard to learn better.
  • Always ask for a feedback from your learners. It is a fact that feedbacks help in effective learning. Tell your learners that you are open for any feedback and query. Allow them to ask their doubts in chats during a class. After class keep some spare time to solve the queries.

Keep the above postulates in mind during online teaching. These fundamentals will immensely help you to keep your learners doing well and your classes soaring high!
